The Mt. Rushmore of Movies Blogathon

This blogathon is hosted by m.brown of Two Dollar Cinema. I haven’t joined a blogathon for a while and this sounds fun. In his words: “To participate, simply choose the top four of anything cinematic and explain why they should be carved into a side of a mountain forever. Remember, these are real people carved into imaginary rock – so choose wisely!”

Inspired by Katy Rochelle of OhSoGeeky’s post ‘Where Did All the Rom-Coms Go?’ I’m going with my favorite Romantic Comedy Leads of the 21st Century. I narrowed down my choices in such a way that no two same personalities appear on the list. I’m excluding Bridget Jones on this because she is my all time favorite romantic comedy lead for this century and I feel like I’ve raved about the movie a lot in this site.  Here are my choices.
Tim Lake, About Time
Tim is just adorable! While the formula of male romantic comedy leads are fairly similar, Tim gets the spot simply because of all the things he does to woo Mary and make her happy, and still fulfill his other responsibilities to his family and friends.

Elle Woods, Legally Blonde
Elle Woods is a great example of female empowerment. While her motives were initially to get her boyfriend back, all her achievements were due to her hard work and putting value on herself as a person.

Donna Stern, Obvious Child
It won’t be long before Obvious Child would join the ranks of ‘movies I constantly rave about in this space’ but for now it’s making an appearance on this list. Donna Stern is a liberal person – she knows when she’s not ready for something, even if her life is also in a kind of progress.

Amelie Poulain, Amelie
Amelie is on the quirky side of romantic comedy leads, but she is an endearing one at that. Not only does she make it her life mission to make people happy, she doesn't deprive herself at a chance of happiness, and making it a fun adventure for her to do so.

  1. I haven't seen About Time (It's in my Netflix queue) but I love the other ones you chose! I just re-watched Amelie the other day. That film never fails to make me happy.

  2. Omg, I claim to love romcoms and yet I've only seen 1 of these movies! Thank you for educating me, but my spare time isn't thanking you for the movie marathon I'll now be having soon haha!
    Tim Lake is adorable <3

  3. Hahahahaha....yes!!! I have seen 3 of the 4 and I think your choices are fantastic. I loved Tim in About Time sooooo much, but, I loved his Dad even more. Tim was such a charming dude, though. Ugh. I would totally be up for re-watching this movie...if it didn't make me cry like a newborn baby.

It's been awhile since I've seen Legally Blonde (or the sequel), but I dig how Elle went from trying to get that lame dude back, to just kicking butt everywhere she went. My question is, who breaks up with HER? Blasphemy.

Amelie may be one of my favorite movies of all time. She is the perfect example of rom-com quirk. She's adorable...but she doesn't overdo it. Brilliant!

Thank you sooooo much for participating. This theme was a very cool idea!!

    1. Bill Nighy is fantastic in About Time; there's a father and son scene there that always makes me cry.
