Favorite Movies of 2013

In a way, 2013 can be considered a good year for film, as there were obvious stand-outs from a roster ranging from really awful to cinematic classic. Even so, I haven't seen my share of releases this year, my count barely going over 50, and not all of them with quality. Still, there were some that have managed to make it to my favorites this year, albeit just a handful of them. I decided not to make a top list simply because there's so much I have yet to see. Here are my favorites from this year. The list is arranged alphabetically.

The origin story might not be familiar to most people (or unheard of, in some cases), but this was truly enjoyable. While Anna was a great character, my favorite sister would have to be Elsa; she won me over with just one scene. The heart of it all was really about family, and how at the end, family and love will triumph.

The cinematic spectacle of the year! I don't think this merits more explanation, but the grand beauty of it immediately made it one of this year's greatest experience. My only regret was not having seen it in 3-D. (review

What started out in a slow pace turns out to be one of the interesting biopics I've seen this year. t's not hard for both actors to embody the personalities they play. (review

Despite the similarities with thriller and horror movies, Stoker was brought to life with great acting and great cinematography. I loved the attention paid to detail, and how the actors seemed to embody their characters rather well. (review

I liked this movie because I found the kid to be a natural; despite being flocked with great actors, he really held out on his own. I would have liked it much better if there were more water park scenes, as the bulk of his coming-of-age was actually when he found confidence to his awkward facade.

The funniest movie I have seen this year. It carried great chemistry from the cast, as well as really funny moments. It's actually quite hard to pick what scene was the best because the entire movie was just a bag of laughs. (review

  1. Great mix of film/genre here! I've seen four of these, and liked them all (The Way Way Back is my least favorite of the batch) and I consider both Gravity and Frozen to be masterpieces in their particular genre! It's always nice seeing diversity in a persons picks for Best of the Year.

    1. Thanks! Frozen itself was a treat, the best animated film I've seen that year, haven't enjoyed a recent Disney movie until this one (Pixar movies not included).

  2. Glad to see The Way Way Back on this list; I agree about the kid and loved the camaraderie among the water park staff. This is the End was very silly and had some big laughs for me. You also can't go wrong with Stoker, which was so visually stunning. Nice list!

    1. I loved The Way Way Back; it wasn't grand, but it featured a lot of talent. It's a movie I watched twice last year! I hope you like it when you get the chance to see it!

  5. Some great films there, most of which I really enjoyed myself. Gravity definitely stands out but I'm wondering if it will have the same impact on the small screen when it arrives on DVD/Blu-ray.

    1. I think it will depend on your DVD/Blu-ray viewing preferences; however, I think it won't beat the impact it had on the big screen. :)

  6. Nice list here. Liam James really was so natural in The Way Way Back. I quite enjoyed that film.

  7. Glad to see FROZEN and GRAVITY, those would be on my top 10 for sure. Not at all interested in This is The End though, but then again R-rated comedies are not my cup of tea.
