Thursday Movie Picks: Time Travel Movies

I first read about the meme through Dell on Movies, and I've been meaning to join it for quite some time! It's hosted by Wandering through the Shelves, another blog that I'm recently frequenting. Each week there's a theme, where you get to pick three movies surrounding said theme. For this week, it's about time travel. The first movie I initially thought of was Back to the Future (it seems like the predominant choice when it comes to time travel movies), so I decided not to use it for my list. Below are three of my picks for this week's theme!

I initially dismissed About Time as something akin to The Time Traveler's Wife, but it's not the same - this was way better than that. The time travel rule here is quite simple: you can only travel to moments that you have lived through before. While we get to watch Tim's adventures with his new found skill, we also get to live through his life, his relationships, and the importance of valuing our time with them.

The third installation of the MIB series deals with changing the the past, when Boris the Animal travels back in time and kills Agent K, rendering his freedom in the future. When Agent J realizes the change, he goes back in time in order to stop Boris from killing Agent K, an adventure that ensues the revival of the franchise.

I remember enjoying Source Code when I first watched it, but it had unanswered questions - at least for me. Colter Stevens wakes up in the body of a victim of a train crash, and stays for eight minutes (until the train crashes), and he regenerates back to the body of the victim through the program called Source Code. The movie was really great, and it was entertaining, though it did leave me with a couple of questions.

  1. The only one of these I've actually seen is Source Code, which was a pretty good movie. I considered it for my own list but ultimately I wasn't really sure if it counted as time travel, largely because the whole thing was a computer simulation (although there was some ambiguity in the end).

    1. The concept of Source Code was easy to understand, but I think it was the mechanics of how the machine worked that made it confusing. I also had doubts with putting this one (for the same reason), but decided to go with it.

  2. Glad you joined in on the fun! Haven't seen About Time, but I am a fan of MIB3. Very fun entry in that franchise. Have to admit, I'm the one guy who didn't like Source Code. I couldn't get into it because I picked out the bad guy right away. This person just looked way too suspicious and it made too much sense. So I was just pissed when I turned out to be right. Anyhoo, that's a "me" issue. Love the post. Hope you keep playing along.

    1. I was actually glad that MIB3 was a great one; I didn't like MIB2 that much (or at all, it was a bit mediocre).

  3. Great picks! Source Code was brilliant but I too had questions afterwards. I think I need a second viewing soon :)

  4. The ending of Source Code was so messed up to me. I wasn't really crazy about the film, but I thought the ending made it all worth it.

  5. Hi there. Nice to have you join us this week. And you have About Time too. I really enjoyed it.
I have seen Source Code which I enjoyed as well. And yes it left us with a lot of questions. Did they ever explain why Colter was used for the mission? Or why that particular victim was chosen instead all the other many victims?

    1. Hi! Thank you for hosting the meme. About Time was lovely. I think Source Code did somewhat hint as to why Colter was used, not sure about the victim though.

  6. Oh About Time was so cute! The time travel thing was a bit messy and required a lot of suspension of disbelief but it led to such a beautiful and poignant ending.

  7. Nice picks, I had thought about choosing MIB3 for my list but thought that would've been too popular. I enjoyed that movie but it was far from superior in the series. I completely forgot about Source Code, that movie was excellent - wish I had thought of it sooner, I may have used it for my list. I've never seen About Time, but it looks interesting enough to check out if I ever get the chance.

    1. Thank you. MIB3 was good, but it lacked that familiar partnership between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Still, it was a fun movie!
