Thursday Movie Picks: Romantic Comedies

Love is in the air in this week’s Thursday Movie Picks hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. There’s a year worth’s themes ready and it’s never too late to join in the fun! Romantic comedies may be getting the short end of the stick when it comes to genre movies, but they can be enjoyable at times. Here are my picks for the week:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut comes in a non-typical romantic comedy Don Jon, where he plays the titular character whose version of love and relationships he derives from his constant viewing of pornography. While the third act seems a bit different compared to the rest of the movie, this was a pretty good movie (and in need of a rewatch soon).

I am a sucker for Bridget Jones’s Diary. I love this movie. I love Bridget and how she’s not the typical rom-com lead. I love Mark Darcy and his weird but still sweet way of making Bridget feel loved.

Drive Me Crazy is my guilty pleasure romantic comedy movie. It’s about two high school students who pretend to be a couple in order to make the people they like jealous, but end up falling in love with each other. I didn’t like the ending of this though, because who ends a rom-com like that? Why can’t the writer just let it be, instead of adding more insane complicated details in their story?

  1. More love for Bridget Jones' Diary. Cool. Don Jon is an excellent choice, very fun movie. Haven't seen your other choice. Sounds interesting, though.

    1. Drive Me Crazy was one of those 90's rom-coms that I ended up liking even with all the complicated crap to their story. I was a fan of Sabrina during that time so yey Melissa Joan Hart, and pre-Entourage Adrian Grenier.

  2. The ending of Drive me Crazy is pretty twisted for such a mainstream film released at the end of the 90's but it's still an enjoyable watch.
It may be a small thing but I do like the fact this movie blatantly shows under age drinking. It doesn't skirt around the issue like most of its peers do.

    1. They didn't need to make it complicated/weird to make it enjoyable. Also, great observation, never really about it that much.

  3. The ending to Drive Me Crazy was sooooo weird. I think in retrospect they probably dropped a few hints, but I certainly didn't see it coming when I watched that film. I love Don Jon, I'm glad you picked that one! I've actually never seen the Bridget Jones movies.

    1. I think they did so too, but why complicate things? Don Jon was great, I can't wait to see what Joseph Gordon-Levitt will do for his next feature.

  4. OMG DRIVE ME CRAZY! I almost picked that one. I was also a huge fan of Sabrina at the time and I remember loving it on VHS. Oh, the 90s!

Scarlett Johansson is insanely great in Don Jon. I thought the movie as a whole was just okay, but I keep wanting to revisit her scenes because she is so freaking hilarious - and DEAD ON as that character.

    1. Yes to Sabrina! I even ended up watching the Sabrina movies one point in time. ScaJo was pretty spot-on in her role, her portrayal was memorable.

  6. I think Bridget Jones is my most rewatched movie ever, I generally love 90's and early 00's Brit comedies and this one is one of the best, love the inclusion of it on your list!

    1. Bridget Jones is one of those movies that keep me hopeful about love, and yet sad at the same time because Mark Darcy doesn't seem to exist! Plus I like how Bridget isn't the ordinary rom-com lead so it was easier to embrace her personality and self-being.

  7. I thought Bridget Jones was enjoyable but I think I would have liked it more with a different leading lady. It's been years since I've seen Drive Me Crazy, I remember it as okay but I only have vague memories. Haven't seen Don Jon but I like JGL so I'll seek it out.

  8. Haven't seen Don Juan, Bridget Jones ended up on my list because I love it too...as for Drive Me Crazy it's been a long time since I've seen it so I can't remember anything about the ending.

  9. Great choices, I still have to check out Don Jon, I've heard many good things about it. I've seen bits of Drive Me Crazy years ago, and should re-watch it soon. Oddly enough I've never even heard of Bridget Jones's Diary until today.

  10. I love the Don Jon pick. Great little movie! I was very impressed with JGL's work on that one. Bridget Jones' Diary was fun but definitely not for me. And Drive Me Crazy is, I'm pretty sure, the only teen romantic comedy I didn't see in my high school years. Good picks!

  14. Bridget Jones’s Diary is a hoot, I sometimes watch clips of it from time to time. Hmmm, I don't consider Don Jon a rom-com but I suppose it has some romantic and comedic moments :) I have a few guilty pleasures from the rom-com genres, one of them is The Wedding Planner w/ J-Lo & McConaughey.
