Thursday Movie Picks: Dance Movies

Thursday Movie Picks is a weekly event hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. We are to pick three movies that correspond to the week’s theme. Dance movies are not my thing; I think I just liked the dancing part better than the plot that goes with the dancing. The only exception is that it can't be a musical or based from one. This category was bit difficult, but here are my picks this week:

When I got around to watching the movie, I wasn’t sure why Dirty Dancing was such a big thing. Yes, I know the whole lift scene and ‘Nobody puts Baby in the Corner’, but I never really got any of that until I actually watched it. Sure Baby might have been a tad annoying at first, but throw away all inhibitions about it and it was an enjoyable movie.

I used to watch Center Stage all the time when I was younger. I only paid half attention to the plot (in general, it’s drama among the other dancers, like competition, the weird love triangle, the struggle to be perfect, etc.) but I was really hooked with all the ballet dancing. I just wished there were more dancing rather than the drama, considering the actors they got were dancers. Also, I think Mandy Moore had a song in relation to this movie?

The plot of Cuban Fury didn’t make much sense, but then again - all .the. dancing. I’m not very gracious with my feet, which is why I think I’m always at awe with dancing because they don’t look clumsy and they know how to move. The movie is about a man who tries to win his boss through salsa dancing, something that he turned his back on when an incident happened. It wasn't a great movie, but it wasn’t awful either. There were enjoyable parts and some great characters! If you’re a fan of Nick Frost or Chris Dowd, you might want to consider watching it.

  1. LOL, we use the same photo for Dirty Dancing.
I never think that Baby is annoying. Patrick Swayze is hot, but he's a jerk in that film.

  2. I expected Dirty Dancing to pop up a few times....

I can't dance either, absolutely no coordination whatsoever. I dance like a drunk giraffe.

Anywho, nice choices, need to see all three of them.

  3. Dirty Dancing was an ok movie for me. I think people like the coming-of-age story, Patrick Swayze and the 60s nostalgia?

  4. Dirty Dancing is one of those I've seen, but only in parts never in one sitting. Maybe that's why I don't quite get all the hype, either. Haven't seen the others, but I'll be watching Cuban Fury soon.

  5. Dirty Dancing is getting a lot of love today! It's nice to see something positive about Cuban Fury, because I like the actors in it, but the reviews I've read have been mostly awful. And Salsa dancing is gorgeous to watch.

  8. Dirty Dancing is full of such great moments. "I brought a watermelon." LOL

    Center Stage is EVERYTHING.

I can't believe I let Cuban Fury pass me by, but my love for Nick Frost was a bit late-blooming, I guess. I will have to give it a shot.

  9. Nice picks. The only movie I've seen is DIRTY DANCING, like someone else above me said, I expected that one to pop up quite a bit hence the reason I didn't want to include it. That and because I don't recall being too fond of it, it was a bit overrated.

  10. Great list! I didn't particularly care for Dirty Dancing or Cuban Fury, but the dancing was terrific.

  12. I've only seen Dirty Dancing which has its charms and was one of those movies that people went to see again and again and again when it was released. I know because my sister was one of those people, she must have seen it twenty times. I know if I run across it now I just have to watch to the end. Not really familiar with Center Stage but had heard of it, Cuban Fury is completely new to me.

I like what you said about how graceful dancers look and how it's to be respected. It pissed me off when I'm watching some musical and Ann Miller is tapping her heart out or some big production number is happening and someone says that's dumb or that doesn't look that hard. I always want to say try spinning around three times while tapping your feet and see if you don't fall over, so shut up!

  13. I loved Center Stage, kind of my guilty pleasure. But people bashed it so hard. Yes, Mandy Moore gave soundtrack, 'I wanna be with you'
