Thursday Movie Picks: Police Movies

Thursday Movie Picks is a weekly meme hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. Head over to her site, check out the themes (this whole year's already released) and join in the fun! This week theme is police movies. Here are my choices this week:

One of the movies I enjoyed watching in the recent past was Beverly Hills Cop. It stars Eddie Murphy and he heads to Beverly Hills when a friend of his gets in trouble. I didn’t enjoy the sequel as much (I didn’t bother watching the third movie, though maybe one of these days) but I could not imagine anyone else playing the role. I wonder what happened to Murphy that he stopped making comedies, or at least movies I know of. I still have a lot more of his filmography to watch, but been enjoying most of what I’ve seen so far.

I initially dismissed 21 Jump Street because it had a January release, which usually means hopeless in Hollywood speak. But this was pretty funny. It wasn’t a raunchy comedy that Jonah Hill usually does and Channing Tatum as a funny man? I wouldn’t even buy it for a second. Still, Hill and Tatum meshed quite well together as played two opposite cops who goes undercover in high school to find the supplier of a new drug.

When I first watched Heat, I did not know I would be investing a lot of time with it. It was alright; the movie didn't feel long and I wanted to see how the cat-and-mouse chase plays out. Al Pacino plays the detective, with Robert DeNiro playing the criminal he was adamant to arrest.

  1. Whoa, someone actually managed to put together a list that didn't include The Departed or Hot Fuzz? That seems to be a rarity this week. Also funnily enough I haven't seen any of these, though I've heard a lot about Heat. Did that count as a police film? I understood it to be a Reservoir Dogs-style film about criminals trying to figure out what went wrong with their heist.

    1. The way I understood the theme, I thought movies where cops chase robbers can be included. I haven't seen Reservoir Dogs, but I thought Heat was both a cop/criminal movie as it focused heavily on the two leads and their determination for their work.

  2. Great picks, always fun to see what overlaps and what doesn't! BHC is a total classic but Heat is really fantastic.

  3. I think I need to give Heat a rewatch, I found it a bit iffy as I do with a lot of Michael Mann's work (I'm not fond of Collateral). Just felt it was tad disappointing despite De Niro and Al Pacino.

21 Jump Street was superb, I was in hysterics in the cinema as was everyone else.

    1. I think Michael Mann movies are a hit-or-miss kind of deals. I enjoyed Heat and Collateral, but dozed off during Blackhat. His movies are quite lengthy.

  4. Sadly, I haven't watch any of your picks, but my mom is a big fan of 21 Jump Street.
I guess that movie will be on my watchlist.

  7. Terrific choices. I haven't seen Beverly Hills Cop in years but it's such a fun ride. I avoided 21 Jump St in the theatres because it had changed the concept from the TV show so much and I'm not much for Jonah Hill but when I finally did it was much better then I expected. Heat wasn't great but it was worth watching to see Pacino and De Niro together.

  8. All of these movies are great! Nice call. I love you went a more comedic route. Heat is so good but I haven't seen it in years.

  9. Good picks. I came pretty close to picking BHC myself. I like Heat a lot but that's the first time I remember Pacino screaming his way through a movie.

  10. Beverly Hills Cop. YES. CLASSIC. I enjoyed 21 Jump Street far more than I thought I would, but I still can't stand Jonah Hill.

    1. Jonah Hill definitely changed his choice of movies since getting nominated. I wouldn't have imagined him being paired with Tatum but they were good.

  12. 21 Jump Street didn't cross my mind at all and it would have been a perfect pick. Like you I was initially reluctant to see the movie as well. Now I know better because it is such a funny enjoyable movie.
