Thursday Movie Picks: Superhero Movies

Thursday Movie Picks is a weekly meme hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. Participants have to pick three movies that are in line for the week's theme and share their choices and thoughts about it. Seeing that the new Avengers movie opens this week, it's quite fitting that this week we talk about superhero movies. While the superhero genre has been consistent since then, it peaked when Marvel released Iron Man and people were impressed so thus began the stream of movies. This boom has made an impact on movie sales that even a fresh franchise (Spider-man) got its reboot before the movies reached a decade. We're even getting prequels for superhero movies! With a ton of these slated for the next couple of years, I wonder if the audience is starting to have superhero fatigue or we just can't get enough of them? Cutting this short, here are my picks this week:

One movie that I was surprised I’d love was Chronicle. I wasn’t a fan of the found-footage format so the movie initially turned me off. Until I watched it. Then I loved it. It’s about three teenagers who acquire superpowers when they stumble into something unknown. However, one of those teens start to use his powers for revenge.

Besides Iron Man, Thor is my favorite stand-alone Marvel movie. The whole movie does seem to happen in a span of three days and you know the cliche rom-com trope that was going to happen between Thor and Jane, but you just get sucked in Thor’s action/personal drama and that’s that. This movie formally introduces us to Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, the latter bringing his character to be an iconic villain.

One of my favorite Pixar movies is The Incredibles, a superhero movie involving a whole family! This was a sequel worthy movie, so I’m very happy that it is finally in development. This was a fun movie, with an array of interesting characters and it helped the family develop their relationship with each other.

  1. Chronicle! I never seen it as a superhero movie, but it indeed has the quality of superhero movie. Love that picks!
It's surprising that you love Thor, 'cause I think Thor is less intrigued compared to other Marvel heroes but the great thing is, all the keypoints in Avengers originated from this franchise.

    1. I like Thor because of its simplicity. It was very direct with everything that's happening, and events seem to be done in a dramatic sense.

  2. Chronicle is one I certainly considered adding, using found footage added an interesting spin on the superhero genre.

Thor is good, my favourite scene is when he walked into a pet shop and demanded to buy a horse. Brilliant.

    1. I didn't expect to like Chronicle because of the found footage aspect, but it really works well with it.

  3. I love The Incredibles too, but really, what's not to love? This sequel has been planned and scrapped a few times, so I'd be excited if this one's really in production. Nice picks.

    1. I really hope they don't cancel the sequel, it's the movie with the most potential of having a sequel. Plus with superhero movies in 'demand', it shouldn't be hard for Pixar to fuel money with the sequel.

  4. Nice picks! Thor was one I didn't care much for at first, but after I watched The Avengers I went back to revisit it and appreciated it so much more. The Incredibles is popular today! I never did see Chronicle, but I read about the ending and accidentally spoiled it for my husband so he got mad and we never watched it. Whoops. :S

  5. I'm so happy that The Incredibles have been making such a huge splash this week!

I need to finally see Thor.

  6. The Incredibles is such a treat from start to finish.
I'm glad you mentioned Thor. I liked that so much more than I thought I would. I had seen The Avengers first and he was my least favourite Avenger in that but his Phase 1 movie was surprisingly fun.

    1. I didn't expect to really like Thor (movie) but I did. The sequel was better in my opinion, but I really enjoyed the first movie that it's still a favorite.

  7. Totally agree with you on Chronicle. I saw it because there was nothing else playing at the time and I really wanted to go to the movies, and ended up having a ton of fun. I'm not sure I buy people's classification of it as a superhero origin story, but I don't care (it was a bonus pick for me this week) since it's so enjoyable. The high-flying football game is wondrous.

    1. I didn't expect to like it but I was really impressed. I'm wary of the sequel though, if production goes forward. It seems like a one-movie kind of deal and I don't know if they're planning to go with a new cast and a new story, or continue off with this one.

  8. The Incredibles are everywhere today! Lol, there is good reason for that. Chronicle is awesome. Really enjoyed Thor, as well.

  9. I'm seeing a lot of Chronicle this week, I have yet to watch it but it does sound intriguing, from the cover art I can't see it being a superhero movie but you and other bloggers have proved me wrong on that fact today. Regarding Thor, I'm not a huge fan and personally would choose Iron Man over him as my favorite Marvel character but I did find the movie enjoyable. The Incredibles...wow I wish I had thought of that one, excellent pick, thats one of my favorite Pixar films as well :)

    1. Chronicle surprised me. I wasn't expecting to like it but I did. It had a slow build at first, but once it gets to the gritty parts, the movie doesn't let go.

  10. Chronicle is such a great film and often overlooked because of the found footage element. But it's one of my favorite found footage films because they find a great way that's explained within the film to have it be found footage, but not shaky handheld the whole time. Also love seeing Thor on someone's list, Loki really is an amazing character and the first film is such a Shakespearean drama sussed up as a superhero film. And of course, the Incredibles has long been one of my favorites, you can't get much better than that one. - Bubbawheat

    1. The found footage element was a turn off for me so I didn't watch it when it first came out. I gave it a chance when it came out on DVD and it impressed me and the found footage element worked well to an advantage.
