Thursday Movie Picks: Teachers

I’ve sat out of months of Thursday Movie Picks, but here it is picking up again. This is hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves, with this week’s theme revolving around teachers. Teachers are part of the building blocks of society. They mold our minds and teach us to think and reason out. I’ve had my fair share of memorable teachers, so my picks are characters that had stood out for me in their profession. Here are my picks this week:

Remus Lupin
Defense Against the Dark Arts, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Hogwarts boasts a home for many memorable professors – there’s Snape, McGonagall, Slughorn, but the teacher that stood out for me was Lupin. He was the fun teacher. He tackles the lessons through activities that engage his students without it feeling tedious or forced. He was very knowledgeable in his subject matter, and is one approachable and respectable man. He was one of the reasons why I loved Prisoner of Azkaban; I think it’s safe to say that he’s a well-rounded character.

Jack Marcus
Advanced Writing, Words and Pictures
Jack Marcus might have his personal problems but it doesn’t reflect on his ability to teach, and his passion on his subject. Words and Pictures revolve around the debacle of which medium says more – words or pictures. He fought for the written word, and has given his student pieces to think about when he tackles his subject. Even though his personal life has taken a toll, there is still unwavering passion to instill to his students the power of words.

Barbara Covett
History, Notes on a Scandal
Barbara doesn’t make the list because she’s a terrific teacher, but rather because of the villainy her character entails. Because she was in need of a friend, she uses the situation to her advantage and blackmails Sheba into being her companion. Notes on a Scandal features amazing performances from two phenomenal women, with both their characters’ plights too disheartening.

    1. That's all right. I'm also in the minority for the Star Wars movies (haven't seen the original three)!

  2. Ahhh! I feel like I've found a kindred spirit. I chose Remus Lupin, too! I'll just back away slowly now before you think I'm crazy... :)

  3. LOVE Notes on a Scandal. Judi is so good in it. Cate Blanchett, too, for that matter. I really want to see Words and Pictures - Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche are both so great. LOVE Lupin and Azkaban is my favorite Potter book and movie.

  4. I loved that teacher from Harry Potter and he was well rounded. I think even more so than Prof. McGonagall. I have not seen the other 2 but want to see Notes on a Scandal

  5. A nice spin on the theme. I didn't even think of the Harry Potter's but Lupin is a great choice out of all the various professors. I thought the presentation of Words and Pictures was rather scattershot but the idea behind it was a good one and both Owen and Juliette Binoche made it better than it would have been. I didn't care for Notes on a Scandal overall but the performances, especially Judi Dench's, were amazing. Terrific picks.

  11. Nice to see another love for HP teachers. I didn't participate this week but I included my picks in my Five for the Fifth post. I gotta go w/ Dumbledore :D

I LOVE that you picked Clive Owen's character in Words and Pictures! I think that's an underrated film. I also love Binoche as the art teacher.

    1. I'm not really the biggest fan of Words and Pictures but loved Owen and Binoche there. They were the only good things about it.

  12. Really wanted to like Words and Pictures but didn't quite. If one teacher passionate about their craft wasn't enough, this one has two and not only that, here they try to inspire passion in their students by encouraging a friendly battle of words vs visuals.
Yay to Notes on a Scandal :)

    1. I honestly thought that the result of the battle was a bit predictable because it can't just be one or the other - I did like Owen and Binoche here though.
