Thursday Movie Picks: Journalists/Reporters for Print/TV

Thursday Movie Picks is a weekly meme hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. She gives out a theme each week, and we are to choose movies that correspond to the specific theme. For this week, it’s about reporters or journalists for print or television. I don’t really know much about reporters or journalists besides the usual details – fact check, report the truth, and always get where the action is. Some of these people are very good at their jobs and are recognized for their hard work in the field. Some get into scandals, which are terrible, especially if it’s directly linked to their work. Here are my picks this week:

Mike Pomeroy
DayBreak, Morning Glory
Mike Pomeroy was a journalist who was known for his exposes, but was transferred to a morning talk show when his contract was nearing his end. While he begrudgingly worked with his co-workers and the crew, he still didn’t give up on his passion, and instead used his opportunities to his advantage. It might not have been the ethical move in terms of workmanship, but it was his responsibility as a reporter to investigate and reveal the truth.

Hildy Johnson
Morning Post, His Girl Friday
Hildy Johnson is one of the top reporters of The Morning Post, working under Walter Burns, who also happens to be her ex-husband. Despite wanting to leave the newspaper game for a quiet life, her passion for the truth still called to her, going through lengths to get the scoop and the story of her career.

Mikael Blomkvist
The Millenium, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Mikhael Blomkvist is a digraced journalist of the magazine he co-founded, forcing him to step down as a reporter. When Henrik Vanger approached him to investigate the disappearance of his granddaughter, he accepted the work. Part of the deal was that Vanger was going to give him something that would redeem his career, particularly something he could use against his opponent. He’s a good investigator, and despite putting his life on the line, he got to solve the mystery.

  1. Great picks! The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo made my list this week, too, and I actually forgot how much I loved that story. I might have to give the book a re-read soon :)

    1. I have yet to read the second and third books - the first one scared me so much!

  2. Haven't seen the other two, but the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (both original and remake) are very enticing---taking journalism too dark, damp swamp. Nice picks!

  3. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of the few remakes as good as the original foreign version. Haven't seen the other, but Harrison Ford is looking rather grumpy in that picture...

    1. Both Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movies are great. I still have to watch the sequels of the Swedish version though.

  4. Nice call on His Girl Friday, That was one of my Blind Spots this year. I haven't seen Morning Glory. Nice call on Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as well!

  5. I am really on a fence about which film adaptation of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo I prefer. The Swedish version is beautifully shot and shows great restraint while Fincher's is more unnerving and menacing. Either one would be a great pick.

  6. Yes, YES, and... well... yes in theory. I think Daniel Craig was a perfect fit for Blomkvist but I didn't connect to him (or the film as a whole really) as much as his counterpart in the original Swedish version. I almost ALMOST picked Morning Glory this week; it's SO underrated.

    1. I liked that she was a strong female character, but I was disappointed with the way the movie ended.

  9. I almost picked His Girl Friday but i thought more people would pick this gem-great film and a powerful woman character. I really enjoyed the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I thought the characters were well developed and acted. I haven't seen the first film but i like Harrison Ford (even though he seems to be wearing quite a bit of make up inthis pic:))

    1. I liked the character in His Girl Friday. I haven't watched a lot of movies during that time, but I found her to be rare from the handful that I've seen.

  10. Oh you made me want to check out Morning Glory. I kind of dismissed it but hey, I like Harrison Ford so I probably will enjoy the movie.

  11. Terrific selections and I like that you spotlighted the reporter in the films.

Rosalind Russell is so perfect in His Girl Friday that it seems insane in retrospect that she only got the role after a half a dozen more established actresses turned it down. All of them were accomplished comediennes but I can't believe any would have been able to top Roz's work. I didn't love Dragon Tattoo but Craig was very good in it. Morning Glory is a bit of fluff but Ford has always been strong in comedy and he and Diane Keaton more or less walk off with the film.

  12. First, I love that you noted the source of journalism with each pick. That was a nice touch. Second...LOVE THESE PICKS! Even though Morning Glory is kind of...weak...the ensemble is great and it's a fun little film.
