Thursday Movie Picks: Movies about Music/Making Music/Musicians

This week’s Thursday Movie Picks will tackle movies about music/making music/musicians. These however, can’t be biopics or focus on real life musicians. I was hoping to use a hidden gem this week but it defies one of the rules so I’ll go with my recent favorites instead.

One of my favorites from 2013 is Begin Again. It features two lost souls who find each other (and a part of theirselves) through music. This features one of my favorite soundtracks of the year, and was so happy that it got nominated for something. Knightley and Ruffalo were quite charming in their roles, and the film was shot well.

Beyond the Lights was certainly talked about last year, particularly concerning the amazing performance of Gugu Mbatha-Raw (this and Belle dominates the greatness of her talent). This is about a troubled young singer Noni, and her encounter with Kaz, a politician in the making. Both stars were good in their roles, and the film was simply a delight to watch.

I never really found accapella singing appealing, but I really did enjoy Pitch Perfect (can’t say the same for the second movie). Basically it’s about a group that wanted to win championships, with two ideas (classic and modern) clashing, in the form of Aubrey Posen, the leader of the Bellas, and Beca, the newcomer forced to audition by one of the Bella members. I had some irks with the movie, but it was an enjoyable flick.

  5. Interesting picks none of which I've seen but all intrigue me. I'm a big fan of both Ruffalo and Keira Knightley so Begin Again will probably be the one I start with. Thanks for the recommends!

I want to see Beyond the Lights! Heard good things.
And Begin Again too! I think it's directed by the guy that did Once?
