My Problems with 'Fuller House'

So Fuller House happened. I finished watching the whole revival series, and instead of feeling nostalgic about the whole show, I feel like I cringed-watched the entire show. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the original show, and it had character growth, and completely hooked me since the first season. This one however, I had problems with. Here is a list:

1. It doesn’t induce nostalgia for the original series, but rather the opposite of it.

The show’s pilot season is basically a rehash of their memorable bits, and dropping not so subtle truth bombs that becomes old after the first minute. So yes, the pilot episode was cringe-worthy but I wavered on, hoping that the rest of the show will get better. It did not. The script itself was cringe-worthy and I had to wonder how I watched seasons of the original show and not get annoyed by it.

2. The show focused on the wrong character.

I love DJ Tanner, but this DJ Tanner was very different. I think Candace Cameron Bure was trying too hard to be funny, but her character was not funny and likable. I feel like she’s being written to be a bit like Danny Tanner, but not funny. I have a lot of problems with her character; she’s the only character whom I found to be kind of annoying. Everyone else was a bit likable, even if they definitely played the supporting character to DJ Tanner’s life.

3. The show also lost its focus, particularly on what made the original show special.

The original show had a lot of heartwarming moments and life lessons, but it lacked all of it here. I feel like I was watching one of those lackluster family sitcoms that lacked content and growth. Even if I wanted the show to carve out its own show path, I think it should have kept the heart of the original show. Instead, they kept mining in the old jokes and those ‘truth bombs’ throughout its 13-episode run. Even the presence of the old cast members didn’t help liven up the show. They also had gimmicks, and tried new things but the jokes really fell flat.

4. That laugh track.

I think the most headache inducing thing in this show aside from DJ Tanner, is the laugh track that kept on playing throughout the show. The jokes aren’t funny, and a laugh track being that noticeable is not good for any show; I think it does say something to the quality of the show. Although that might be just me.

When I binge-watch something especially in short form television, I expected to be hooked at least a third in, or at least the show to find its footing a few episodes in. It did not happen through the run, and I was left disappointed and wasted most of my time. Some of the episodes were all right, but most of the time the show felt lost, or that the storyline didn’t make much sense as it progressed. There’s not much character growth, and it definitely lost that charm that made Full House a loveable show. Just watch the original show; I think it stood the test of time.

  1. I wanted this to be great, but you're right on all over the place here. In fact, you may be too kind. The 'life lesson' moments are so messy here, so forced and cringe worthy (Steph can't have kids...and we care, why?) and the whole thing feels so cheap, like even cheaper than Disney channel. At least Girl Meets World hit a stride and felt...like it's own animal. This is such a try hard.

But that kid who plays Max...cute as a frickin button and, given a better sitcom, could be a star.

    1. This was really generic and annoying, but loved Max. He was adorable.

  2. I saw bits of the first episode and.... I just couldn't watch it after 5 minutes. It's just so fucking awful. And the fact that they try to guilt shame the Olsen Twins for not wanting to be involved in this. Well after seeing this, no wonder they didn't do it. Plus, why does John Stamos look like a fuckin' dinosaur?

    1. They don't stop guilt shaming the Olsen twins in the first episode - it just goes on and on. This was terrible, and I can't believe they got picked up for another season.

  3. I was never a fan of the original series, but I watched a few episodes of this because my wife was and she wanted to see it. Nothing funny happened and that damn laugh track just kept cackling away. I tuned out after about the third episode.

    1. That laugh track was a headache. The whole season was a waste of my time.

  4. I avoided this like the plague. Even the promise of "nostalgia" is not going to make me want to give this a shot. The clips are terrible, and after seeing Candace Cameron Bure post on her website that she follows Michael and Debi Pearl's "parenting" book To Train Up a Child, I never want to watch anything with her in it again. (Seriously, google that book. It's basically how to abuse your child)

    1. The book sounds horrible and insane. Children are meant to be nourished and love, not starved and abused.

  5. I just had absolutely no desire to watch this series despite liking (not loving) the original series in the '90s. I'm just baffled that of all the shows in the world, this one got the green light for a reboot. I don't get it. Olsen twins were smart, as usual.
