Thursday Movie Picks: Non-English Language Movies - Spanish

Thursday Movie Picks is hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. This is a weekly event where she provides us with a theme, and we give three movies that fit said theme. This week's theme is Spanish movies. Here are my picks this week:

Wild Tales
Original Title: Relatos salvajes
Wild Tales was an unexpected film. I haven't heard much about it when I first saw it, but it was amazing. It's a series of stories, and they're all clever and funny; I have my favorites from the anthology. I have a slight penchant for dark comedies, so if you're a fan of the genre, I suggest watching this film.

Pan's Labyrinth
Original Title: El laberinto del fauno
Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies - its dark, fantasy theme really clashes well with the war front story that is unfolding. I initially thought this would be a tad on the horror front (I really don't like horror movies), but the story is narrated very well.

The Skin I Live In
Original Title: La piel que habito
The Skin I Live In is my first and only Almodovar film so far. His films all seem interesting but I haven't gotten around to watching more of them. This one is based on a book by Thierry Jonquet. I remember liking this film a bit, except that I found the book to be darker in nature compared to the adaptation. Nonetheless, this was still an interesting film.

  1. I still have to see La piel que habito, which I've been excited for ever since I heard it existed, and the other ones are so very good. I am glad the pick was Spanish movies, I should make myself a "to be watched" with the same theme.

  2. Great list! I have Wild Tales saved in my Netflix queue, I also chose Pan's Labyrinth. The Skin I Live In was good too, but I had the ending spoiled for me beforehand and I always wonder if I would've seen that twist coming.

    1. I read the book The Skin I Live In was based on, and this wasn't as dark as it was in the book, but it's still quite shocking.

  3. Pan's is amazing. The Skin I Live In is the best kind of disturbing. So many jaw-dropping moments. You should see more Almodovar.

  4. Seen all three of your picks, I did enjoyed Wild Tales but preferred certain stories over others (that plane story was gripping stuff).

Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite films, such a dark but beautifully made film.

    1. Wild Tales is an amazing film, and if you're a fan of Almodovar, check out The Skin I Live In. I can't compare how it fares with his other works, but I did find the adaptation to be not as sinister as the book.
