No, You're Crying! Blogathon

Debbie over at Moon in Gemini is hosting the No, YOU'RE Crying! Blogathon. The rules are simple - talk about our favorite tearjerker films! Head over to her site for a list of participants and their subsequent entries. I had a bunch of movies that made it to my short list, but ultimately decided on the movie that I keep coming back to. That is Disney's The Fox and the Hound - and it does not fail to make me cry. Note: spoilers for the movie below.

The Fox and the Hound tells the story of two animals that form an unlikely friendship. Tod and Copper were brought together by proximity; Tod was adopted by a lovely old woman who happens to live next door to a hunter who brings Copper home as new hunting dog. The two eventually becomes playmates and friends, but as they got older, their nature sets in; Tod being viewed as game while Copper become a natural hunter.

It has been a long time since I've watched this but I loved this movie when I was a child. Although its animation is dated and not up to par with recent movies, I cannot seem to let this go. No matter how many times I've seen it, I still cry on the same scenes over and over again. It made me sad knowing that despite their friendship, they could never be near each other again because of what they are and their environmental relationship with each other. Thinking about it now, friendships are and will be complicated in times, but when you're a kid, friendships are a simple thing.

Two particular scenes always made me bawl my eyes out. First is this scene:

After an incident involving one of the dogs, the old woman realizes that Tod is no longer safe in her home so she drives him to the forest so he can be safe.

The second scene is towards the end of this clip

The scene before this is the climax of the movie. After an entire chase sequence, it ends with the hunter getting ready to shoot Tod, but Copper intervenes and stands in between them, saving Copper. Even after the entire ordeal, they are still friends, even if they can no longer spend time with each other.

Obviously, voice overs make me cry. *wipes tears off face*

While there are so many movies out there about friendship, this one will always have a special place. It's a childhood movie that I love, and the fact that I still think about it whenever the topic of 'movies that make me cry' is mentioned says how much this had an impact on me back then.

  1. I watched this movie when my kids were younger. The movie is not a huge tearjerker for me, but I liked the give-and-take between the title characters, and that ending scene really did hit home. Nice post!

  2. The Fox and the Hound gets you right in the heart. The Widow Tweed song just about snaps my heart in two.

The animation for the sequence with the bear is truly thrilling. And the voice actors are perfect for each of the characterizations. There is a reason you remember it, and that it is a classic.

  3. A great choice! I've lost count at how many times I've bawled through Disney films. If this makes you cry, then I would definitely NOT recommend watching the original live-action film version of the story - The Belstone Fox ( 1973 ). It's a British film and labeled as a "family classic" but it's truly heart-wrenching and not kid-friendly ( in fact, there were a few scenes I had to skip forward because I couldn't bear to watch them ).

  4. It's been years since I've seen this, but I remember being surprised at how moving it was. That last scene!

This is one I need to see again. Thanks for putting it on my radar. :)

  5. Movies about unlikely friendships are my kryptonite, and it's a shame I never caught up with this one. Sounds wonderful.

Thanks so much for joining in the blogathon!
