Thursday Movie Picks: Work Place Movies

It’s another Thursday which means another week for Thursday Movie Picks, hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves! This week’s theme is about work place movies. When I think of work place I usually think of four walls, paperwork, and all the technical jibber jabber there is in offices. However, a workplace is more than that, so I’m going to go ahead and deviate from that one. Here are my choices this week:

While Mannequin doesn’t seem to be a typical work place movie, most of the movie does have him do work in the department store. An artist who used to construct mannequins for a living, he was hired as a stock boy for the department store where his perfect mannequin was. However, that mannequin was magical as she turns into a woman at night and they both begin to do the window displays of the store, garnering the shop more customers, much to the chagrin of its competitor. This movie was quite silly and weird, but you have to buy into the premise to enjoy the movie.

A movie that takes place in a school, School of Rock chronicles the life of Dewey Finn and his mission to transform a group of fifth graders into a rock band that he needs to compete in a contest. This was highly enjoyable and Jack Black was good in this. You can’t help but root for their band and performance.

I’m winging it and putting Gravity on this spot. On a technicality it is a work place movie because Dr. Ryan Stone was hired to go on a mission to place something in space - so space is her work place. It just happens that an unexpected event causes the mission to go awry and we get to watch her try to get back to Earth.

And for an actual work place movie:

Office Space is the first movie that came to mind, though I think this would have been a popular choice this week. It’s about four guys who are completely fed up with their jobs and decide to do something about it. As comedies go, there is mayhem, but I found this to be really entertaining and funny.

  1. Interesting choices. I deliberately chose some unusual ones but I probably wouldn't have thought of Gravity. The whole first fifteen minutes is basically a routine space walk (something many real astronauts are familiar with; just ask those people on the ISS) so I guess that would technically count. Honestly, I'm a little surprised because I was expecting everyone would just bring out movies that took place largely in an office. Apparently I'm not the only one who tried to think outside the box.

    1. I thought of the same thing. When the word 'work' is mentioned, I usually think of offices but it really depends on your profession.

  2. Mannequin sounds absurd...I like that. May check it out. There were always going to be different interpretations of the theme and you picks fit within them I think. Gravity is great, a movie for the big screen.

    1. Gravity is better seen on the big screen but it's also amazing even on a small screen.

  3. I love that you went with Gravity, I think that definitely qualifies! School of Rock is a great choice too, and I haven't seen the other one.

  6. Love these! Mannequin is such a product of it's time even though it's a remake of Ava Gardner's One Touch of Venus. I have limited patience for Jack Black but School of Rock was an extremely good fit for him and a fun film. Gravity is an inventive choice, even though people don't really think of it that way space is an astronaut's workplace. Office Space is everywhere today.

  9. Great post! I picked Office Space too. It's odd that I've never seen Mannequin, since I had a huge crush on Andrew McCarthy in the '80s.

  10. Mannequin is such a strange movie...fun...but strange. Then again, is it any stranger than the exhibits at a museum coming to life at night?

Very nice inclusion of Gravity, too. Love the outside the box thinking!
