Thursday Movie Picks: Kids Movies Adults Would Enjoy

We are entering the sixth month of Thursday Movie Picks, a weekly meme hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. She gives us a theme to work with each week and we choose three movies that correspond with the theme. This week is all about kids movies that adults would enjoy. Immediately I would think of some animated ones, but that’s this week’s restriction, movies are supposed to be non-animated. I’m not sure if this only meant G-rated movies, or movies that use cartoon-stop motion animated like props (like The NeverEnding Story) can be used, or what exactly constitutes as a kids movie. Here are my choices this week:

I wrote a list a while back about movies I wished I’ve watched when I was younger, and Jurassic Park made the list. I can’t say the same for the sequels but the first one is best seen when you’re a kid, and is still a great enjoyable flick today. It was exciting and thrilling and a wonderful movie. With Jurassic World coming out this year, I hope it recaptures the same magic that Jurassic Park gave.

Believe it or not, this ‘horror’ movie is actually for kids. Rare Exports is about the origin of Santa, and while it didn’t pass off to me as a horror movie, the bleak setting can be scary for kids, especially when the big reveal takes place. It’s a good story and an interesting take in the whole Santa business, especially if you’re interested in finding out about folklore from other countries.

By the looks of it I associate children’s movies with Christmas, but Home Alone was a movie I enjoyed both as a child and as an adult. Despite numerous sequels, nothing beats out the original Kevin and his antics and his irrational fears. Plus this is the ultimate kid-at-home lifestyle, minus the whole robbery phase.

  1. Jurassic Park is a great pick. Love it. I've never heard of Rare Exports, but sounds interesting. And I'm probably the only person over 30 who has never sat through Home Alone in its entirety.

  2. I haven't seen rare exports, but I have so much love for Jurassic Park (and I had love for Home Alone when I was a kid too, though I liked the sequel better) You're so right about Jurassic Park being the best when you were a kid. I was 6 when that movie came out and I became so interested in dinosaurs because of it. I think a lot of kids did.

  3. Home Alone is wonderful! So is Jurassic Park...but that's not really a kid's movie, is it? I mean, there is a man who is ripped in half off a toilet. LOL, I mean, there are kids that love that movie, so maybe, I guess. I have never even heard of Rare Exports...but that sounds VERY interesting.

    1. I think it's the awe factor that makes Jurassic Park a kid's movie. I would definitely want that park to exist (without the possibility of death, of course!)

  4. I guess Jurassic park is a kids movie. I wish I'd thought of it. I mean, why would Spielberg keep insisting on writing in ridiculously smart kids in these movies unless they were trying to appeal to kids.
Home Alone made my list too. I just rewatched it and and couldn't believe how much fun it was for an adult.

  5. I never would've thought of Jurassic Park, but that's a great pick. I remember it being marketed towards kids and then going to see it at the theater at 9 years old and being absolutely terrified. Home Alone is a great one as well. My wife and I watch it every year when we wrap Christmas presents. Total staple in my home.

  7. Love that you put Jurassic Park on here. I remember seeing this in theaters as a kid, and it terrified me!! I'm rooting for Jurassic World only because I'm a huge fan of the original...and apparently, this is "the sequel we've been waiting for". ...so here's hoping!!! :)
