Against the Crowd Blogathon 2015

Wendell from Dell on Movies is hosting another blogathon! Its a sequel to the Against the Crowd Blogathon he hosted last year (you can read my entry here). Here are the rules:

1. Pick one movie that "everyone" loves (the more iconic, the better). That movie must have a score of at least 75% on rottentomatoes.com. Tell us why you hate it.
2. Pick one movie that "everyone" hates (the more notorious, the better). That movie must have a score of less than 35% on rottentomatoes.com. Tell us why you love it.
3. Include the tomato meter scores of both movies.
4. Use one of the banners in this post, or feel free to create your own.

Movie Everybody Loves But I Don't
American Hustle (2013)
Director: David O. Russell
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 93%

I hated this movie. I do not understand what the big deal was and why everyone was so in love with it. I watched it because of the high praises, but I found the film dull. I cannot believe Jennifer Lawrence got a nomination for this; she was quite a miscast in the role. The whole ordeal was forgettable in general - none of the scenes stand out. Even the performances were a bit so-so. I feel like I've seen the movie before, and these movies presented the content in a better way.

Movie Everybody Hates (But I Don't)
Austenland (2013)
Director: Jerusha Hess
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 30%

Shannon Hale's Austenland made for a delightful read, giving her readers a fantasy on how it was to go on a Jane Austen-era like holiday. The movie exuded something close to that. Most of my enjoyment came from the performance of Keri Russell, who was quite charming as the protagonist. I think if it were a different actress the movie wouldn't be as fun as she made it to be. It does lack in certain factors (character dvelopment, etc) but I didn't only tune into this for that. It was really the Jane Austen like holiday that sold me on watching the movie, and in that case, it delivered its promise.

    1. I really don't understand the love for American Hustle. I can't believe it was nominated for Best Picture and was winning awards!

  3. I never saw Austenland. I'm one of those people that loved American Hustle, but I agree Jennifer Lawrence should not have gotten an Oscar nomination for that film. She was fine, amusing, but not Oscar worthy. Especially compared to Amy Adams in that film.

    1. Amy Adams was good. Lawrence was not, at least for her role in this. She doesn't seem to fit the role.

  4. I really like American Hustle and Lawrence in it, but agree it wasn't terribly memorable. The fact that I disagree makes this a great fit. Didn't bother with Austenland. Jane Austen just doesn't do it for me so I wasn't going to watch it. So glad you took part again. Thanks!

  5. I was never interested in watching Austenland and I doubt that I would. Though I agree on the American Hustle hate.. it was just.. all over the place and weird and not in a good way weird.

  6. I agree that American Hustle had a sense of deja vu to other films and it didn't really impress me that much. I didn't hate it...I didn't love it...it just was...there. None of the actors were all that strong and Jennifer Lawrence, an actress I like, was far too young for her role. Had Russell cast someone along the lines of Kristen Scott-Thomas or Virginia Madsen the role and the character's story would have made much more sense. The Oscar nomination was undeserved.

I have Austenland on its way to me in the mail as we speak your positive take on it gives me high hopes that I'll like it since I like Keri Russell a great deal.

    1. An older actress would have suited Lawrence's role much better. I hope you enjoy Austenland!
