Thursday Movie Picks: Movies Adapted From Movies of a Different Language

Thursday Movie Picks is back (on my blog at least)! The weekly event hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves is on its third year so if you’re up to join the fun, head over to her blog! This week’s theme is about movies adapted from movies of a different language. I usually try to put movies that I like but I'm listing down movies that I thought were really bad and would never want to watch again.

THE LAKE HOUSE
Adapted from: Il Mare, South Korea

I loved Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock in Speed. They had great onscreen chemistry and would love to see them work together again. I got my wish with this movie. The movie is about two people who live in the same house but one was at the past (2 years ago, I think) while the other was living in the present. They communicate through a mailbox, and through their communication, they fall in love. Was it any good? No. I don’t know if the original movie was any better, but I did not enjoy this one at all.

GODZILLA
Adapted from: Gojira, Japan

The 2014 remake is getting hate (it really didn’t feature a lot of the monster) but the 90's movie is a monstrosity. It’s not even popcorn-flick kind of good. It’s about a monster that terrorizes a city, and the monster is a girl and she laid a ton of eggs that are about to hatch, which will repopulate fast so the people involved have to be fast in order to stop it. I don’t remember much from this at all, but remembered enough not to watch this again.

LOL
Adapted from: LOL, France

No. Just no. The plot has something to do with a girl who just broke up with her boyfriend and is trying to find herself, and then her mom reads her journal – or it was somewhere of that sort. This was terrible. The original might have been good, but this was not.

  1. Welcome back to TMP! You and I are on the same wavelength in picking movies we hated this week (my post goes up in about an hour). We even share a movie. Great job!

  2. I couldn't pick my favourites this week either, I had to go with the only 3 I've actually seen, ha! I forgot about Godzilla though! I had no idea LOL was a remake, I can't say I'm going to rush to see that any time soon :)

  3. LOL looked so bad. I remember the previews for it. I never saw The Lake House and you're right, the 90's Godzilla was terrible. I actually enjoyed the 2014 version, it was fun enough and I liked the leads.

    1. Compared to the 90's, the 2014 version was an improvement!

  4. I didn't know The Lake House was a remake. The first time I've seen it I was 14 and I liked it quite a lot. I've watched it recently and it was nothing more than a cheesy, stupid film. LOL was just a huge no. I haven't seen the original, but I'm sure it's better.

    1. I have yet to watch the original movies of The Lake House and LOL but I am sure they're tons better.

  5. I love that you went the 'I wish I never saw this' route this week! Perfect theme for it too, since most adaptations of foreign films pale in comparison to the original.

I kind of guilty pleasure love Godzilla...but I know it's pretty awful.

    1. NO!!! Well...some of my guilty pleasure movies are awful too, can't blame you there!

  6. HA! The awful remakes seem to be a mini theme of the week, unfortunately that does seem to be the case more often than not.

I too love Keanu and Bullock in Speed but this reunion just looked so sticky sweet that I've always given it a pass, looks like the right choice.

The original Godzilla isn't much but the 90's remake is the worst! I remember seeing it at a cheapie matinee when it was out and still feeling overcharged when it was over.

Haven't seen LOL but this isn't the first time I have heard terrible things about it.

I'll offer my picks for the week as a sort of counter-balance, I'd recommend both the original and the remakes of all of them.

Sorcerer (1977)-Four desperate men agree to transport a volatile shipment of nitro-glycerin over rugged terrain in the hopes of earning enough money to escape their present state. William Friedkin directed remake of the French classic Wages of Fear wasn’t a big success on its initial release but is a taut gritty drama. An international cast headed by Roy Scheider give intense performances. Perhaps not the equal of the original but on its own a solid suspenser.

Human Desire (1954)-Fritz Lang helmed redo of Jean Renoir’s La BĂȘte Humaine is hampered a trifle by the Hayes Code but his great cast, in particular Broderick Crawford and Gloria Grahame, and solid direction fill in the code demanded blanks. Loaded with sexual undertones.

Intermezzo (1939)-American remake of identically named Swedish film also starring Ingrid Bergman served as her introduction to Hollywood. A world famous concert violinist becomes enamored with his daughter’s piano instructor. Feeling restless he invites her to tour with him, eventually they become involved and he leaves his family for her but soon realizes what he had originally. It’s a weepie loaded with beautiful music that’s worth catching for Ingrid’s stateside debut.

Honorable Mention-Point of No Return (1993)-Stylish, glossy remake of Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita with Bridget Fonda at the height of her brief heyday as the druggie turned government assassin. Not quite as sleek as the original but a propulsive engrossing thriller with Anne Bancroft a standout in her brief role as an etiquette teacher with an underlying fierceness.

    1. I haven't seen any of your picks but I've been wanting to watch La Femme Nikita. Intermezzo sounds interesting!

  7. I didn't know that the Lake House was a remake. It makes sense, b/c it didn't translate well. The 2014 Godzilla film made my husband fall asleep. My favorite part was probably the end. I think it was about 1/2 hr too long. I did like Ken Watanabe's pronounciation of "Gojira." He refused to pronouce it the English way, which was great!

    1. I was looking forward for Lake House because of the Keanu/Sandra collaboration but that was really disappointing.

  8. I don't know why, but the Godzilla remake in the 90s never crossed my mind. I remember going to the theater to see it, and, I have to be honest, the 14 year old version of me fucking loved that movie. Great pick! Even though you hated it. I'm sure you're right about it sucking.

  9. Oh good ole Godzilla! I talked about the original last year so I couldn't pick him this year. Yes the remake is bad but for some reason, I can see it again. I thought the Lakehouse was pointless. I am all for time travel but meh. The last one looks like it is Demi Moore and Miley Cyrus...that's enough for me to not watch it:)

    1. LOL is not worth watching, I wished I could have seen the original instead.

  10. So right about Godzilla. I haven't seen The Lake House just because the premise sounds so ridiculous to me, but I know people like it.

    1. I'm going to try to give the original movie a go, hopefully Lake House didn't destroy it for me.

  11. Ah yes Godzilla! I liked the recent version, but only the action parts featuring the creature himself. Your description of LOL was exactly what I thought when I saw posters everywhere for it.

  12. I saw both LOL. Yeah the original was better. I think the first thing the did wrong with the remake was to get Miley, she can't really act.
