09/16: Monthly Recap

By my standards I got to watch a decent number of movies, although I have been pacing myself. Though it doesn’t mean that a good chunk of them were amazing; a lot were a bit so-so to good. Nothing massively disappointing. With that said here are the movies I watched this September!

Other First Time Viewings
Captain America: Civil War – Captain America has continuously spawn great movies (at least in my book), this did not disappoint. The villain in this installment is not the flashy kind, but the plan was pretty smart.

Love, Rosie – If I had seen this sooner, I would have gone with this for Against the Crowd! I thought I would dislike this but this was adorable. I’m going to try and read the book before the year ends.

The Secret Life of Pets – This was ok. I’m having a hard time loving animated movies lately, especially ones whose plots I’ve seen played out numerous times.

The Nice Guys – The beginning dragged out, but it was the final 20/30 minutes or so that saved this for me. It was funny, and I liked the banter between Gosling and Crowe.

The Meddler – I liked the parts with Susan Sarandon and JK Simmons. While the point of Sarandon’s character was to process her grief, the ‘processed’ part wasn’t fleshed out, as it was a bit anti-climactic. Still, a enjoyable dramedy.

The Mermaid – I got curious about China’s highest grossing film. I’m not that familiar with Stephen Chow as I’ve only seen a few of his works. However, this doesn’t go far from what I’ve perceived to be his comedic style. However, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I would like to.

Bridget Jones’s Baby – It was better than I expected. The trailer made it look like it was trying a bit too hard to be funny and I thought that this would be terrible. I enjoyed this a lot, though it’s not as good as the first movie.

Keanu – There are so many points in where this movie could turn to the dumb-awful-comedy direction but it didn’t go there. Neither did it give anything new to the genre, except possible the whole point of the movie, which was about the cat.

Ghostbusters - I didn't mind that it was a rehash of the original, but it kinda fell flat for me. Paul Feig comedies are generally well-liked, but I felt that the cast wasn't giving it their all. It could have been funnier.

Demolition - Great color palette aside, I found this really boring, with the story kind of pointless.

Swiss Army Man - I have a review coming out soon.

Alice Through the Looking Glass - I liked this better than the first one, although I didn't care for the Hatter's story.

  1. LOVED Civil War. Swiss Army Man and The Nice Guys were also pretty great. You liked Keanu better than I did, and I agree on Demolition. It's like that film ran out of ideas after 30-45 minutes.

    1. Civil War was awesome! I was expecting a bit more from Demolition but it just dragged on.

  2. I really can't wait to read your thoughts on Swiss Army Man, mine haven't found their way onto paper yet, they're still jumbled in my head!

  3. Oddly enough I really enjoyed Paul Feig's Ghostbusters remake, I almost skipped it because like the majority I originally thought the idea to remake such a classic from 1984 was insane.

I agree with your opinion on The Secret Life of Pets, I'm getting tired of seeing the same old plot used for animated films (or any film, really). Seems as if Hollywood ran out of ORIGINAL ideas..

  4. I've enjoyed all three Captain America movies, and the third one certainly is excellent. I agree w/ what you said about the villain. We're also in agreement about The Nice Guys and Bridget Jones' Baby.

    1. The conflict in the Captain America movies tend to push the Marvel narrative, I can't wait to see how this affects the future Avenger movie.
