I mentioned in last week’s post that some of us preferred to meet potential dates organically, but for others they’re willing to give online dating a try. There are so many dating apps now! Not every match is a success though, and when you know of friends who have met their significant others through a dating app, you become less and less skeptical about using one. Besides, with the world turning deeper in the technology, maybe online dating will be the new normal some day. Here are my movie choices for the week.
Timer - I really like the premise of Timer, but I don’t recall most of the movie and if I liked it or not. This is set in present day (at least the present of the release year), and there’s this technology that you get implanted on your wrist. It tells you exactly when you’re going to meet the person destined for you. The main character is obsessed with finding the one, but her implant hasn’t worked yet - it only shows you the time when the other person also gets an implant. I remember the film starting with people forcing their significant others to get implanted to see if it will light up. I think she starts dating someone who doesn’t believe in the system of implants. I am definitely going to give this a rewatch soon.
Her - This is one of my favorite science fiction films, and one that I think is feasible in the future. This has Joaquin Phoenix keeping a relationship with an AI, Samantha. I like how there was a progression, even if their relationship challenges are not of the norm.
Love, Simon - I haven’t really heard much about the film beyond its initial release, but I know the source is a well-beloved novel. This has Simon changing emails with a certain boy from his school, with their love story building from there.
