Thursday Movie Picks: Love in the Tech Age

I mentioned in last week’s post that some of us preferred to meet potential dates organically, but for others they’re willing to give online dating a try. There are so many dating apps now! Not every match is a success though, and when you know of friends who have met their significant others through a dating app, you become less and less skeptical about using one. Besides, with the world turning deeper in the technology, maybe online dating will be the new normal some day. Here are my movie choices for the week.

Timer - I really like the premise of Timer, but I don’t recall most of the movie and if I liked it or not. This is set in present day (at least the present of the release year), and there’s this technology that you get implanted on your wrist. It tells you exactly when you’re going to meet the person destined for you. The main character is obsessed with finding the one, but her implant hasn’t worked yet - it only shows you the time when the other person also gets an implant. I remember the film starting with people forcing their significant others to get implanted to see if it will light up. I think she starts dating someone who doesn’t believe in the system of implants. I am definitely going to give this a rewatch soon.

Her - This is one of my favorite science fiction films, and one that I think is feasible in the future. This has Joaquin Phoenix keeping a relationship with an AI, Samantha. I like how there was a progression, even if their relationship challenges are not of the norm.

Love, Simon - I haven’t really heard much about the film beyond its initial release, but I know the source is a well-beloved novel. This has Simon changing emails with a certain boy from his school, with their love story building from there.

Thursday Movie Picks is hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves.

  1. We match on Her! I love that movie. I have't seen Love, Simon or Timer. This is the first I think I'm hearing of Timer at all. That sounds really interesting.

    1. I have to watch Timer again. Beyond the premise I don't remember much from it.

  2. We match on Her and Love, Simon. I wasn't a fan of the first — I've been meaning to give it another chance though — but I loved the latter. It is such a good feel-good movie as well as a good adaptation.

    1. I do the same thing too (give another chance to a film people seem to love) at times - did it with (500) Days of Summer. When I first watched it, I wasn't its biggest fan.

  3. How did I not think of Love, Simon? It's a great pick!

  5. I wanted to write I haven't heard of Timer but when I saw the POSTER then I realised what it was! :D That's quite sad.. This reminds me that I used to LOVE John Patrick Amedori tho. Love, Simon is adorable, one of my favourite YA novel adaptations from recent years!

  6. Nice picks! I haven't heard of Timer but it sounds interesting. Her was a great concept, but I just couldn't get into it. But I love Love Simon, and thought the movie was so much better than the book.

  7. I haven't heard of Timer either.
I haven't seen Love, Simon, but have read the book. Did you know they're making a TV series of it.
